Goal update

The ABQ BioPark recognizes that, in New Mexico, El Agua es Vida.

Water is Life.

The ABQ BioPark is committed to demonstrating and improving water stewardship practices across its facilities. As part of this commitment, the BioPark is working to adopt improved data tracking and feedback loops to better inform water conservation strategies and track progress toward its goals.

Recent Efforts

Passive Water Capture

The ABQ BioPark has implemented passive water catchment at the Heritage Farm and Botanic Garden. This green infrastructure increases rain water capture and infiltration, reducing the amount of irrigation required.

Water Recycling

The Australia exhibit’s Little Penguin habitat incorporates a water recycling system that enables the BioPark to capture grey water for reuse on grounds.

Upcoming Projects

Rainwater Capture and Reuse

The Heritage Farm plans to install a new water collection systems that will redirect rainwater for irrigation. Rainwater catchment systems are also being explored for existing priority buildings.

Dump and Fill Solutions

The BioPark has several dumb and fill pools that it is seeking to convert to less water-intensive filtration technologies to manage these features.
