Goal Update

Baseline (2024): 19% of staff get to work in ways other than driving alone in a car

Goal: 30% of employee trips to and from work are made via active commuting by 2030

What is Active Commuting

Active commuting includes commute modes such as carpooling, biking, taking the bus and using other forms of transit that are less emissions intensive than driving alone in a personal vehicle. The most popular active commute mode at the BioPark is carpooling, which represents 8% of employee trips to and from work.

ABQ Guaranteed Ride Home

Commuters that choose to carpool, vanpool, ride the bus, bike, or walk to work at least 3 times a week are eligible to register for the City’s Guaranteed Ride Home program. This program provides rides with access to a free ride home in the event of a qualifying emergency, such as:

  • Illness at work
  • Family member illness
  • Missing last scheduled bus pick up
  • Problems with bicycle

ABQ RIDE Zero Fares and Expanded Network

The City of Albuquerque’s public transit network, ABQ RIDE, is a zero-fare system providing bus transportation access at no cost to riders. Starting in December 2025, the first phase of the 19-phase ABQ RIDE Forward Plan was initiated to increase network coverage and adjust pickup frequencies to better match demand across the City.
