Goal update

The BioPark currently diverts 34% of it’s waste from the landfill. A significant amount of green waste is diverted through on-site and off-site programs:

  • Off-site CompostĀ includes green waste sent to the Albuquerque Bernalillo County Water Utility Authority for composting.
  • On-site CompostĀ includes animal manure, hay, and leaves produced at the Heritage Farm and composted on-site by the BioPark staff.

Cardboard recycling and mixed recycling represent the primary streams used by the BioPark to divert non-organic materials from the landfill.

Upcoming Projects

On-Site Composting Assessment

The BioPark is currently working to evaluate the potential for expanding it’s on-site composting program to further divert animal waste, guest food waste, and other organic materials from the landfill.

Waste Infrastructure Update

The BioPark is developing a plan to implement waste infrastructure that is aligned with best practices to support waste reduction and diversion efforts. Uniform multi-stream waste stations and clear educational signage will be used across the BioPark’s diverse facilities to ensure a seamless experience for guests, volunteers, and staff to participate in circular waste practices.
